What Does the Algebra Topic Cover?

Algebra is often the topic students find most challenging at GCSE, but it is also where the most marks are available on higher-tier papers. Mastering algebraic reasoning opens the door to Grades 7, 8 and 9. If your Algebra score is below a Grade 5, targeted practice on equations and graphs can produce rapid improvement.

Expressions & Formulae (20 marks)

Simplifying, expanding and factorising expressions. Substituting into formulae and rearranging formulae to change the subject. This sub-topic carries the most marks because it underpins every other algebra skill.

Equations (15 marks)

Solving linear equations, simultaneous equations (algebraically and graphically), and quadratic equations by factorising, completing the square, and using the quadratic formula. Equation-solving is tested in almost every exam paper.

Sequences (15 marks)

Recognising and generating arithmetic and geometric sequences. Finding the nth term of linear and quadratic sequences. Understanding how sequence rules connect to linear and quadratic functions.

Graphs (15 marks)

Plotting and interpreting linear, quadratic, cubic and reciprocal graphs. Understanding gradients, y-intercepts, and the equation of a straight line. Real-life graphs including distance-time and velocity-time graphs.

Inequalities (15 marks)

Solving linear and quadratic inequalities. Representing solutions on a number line and on a graph. Understanding the difference between strict and inclusive inequalities.

How Think Smart Academy Can Help

Algebra builds on itself — if you miss the fundamentals of expressions and equations, graphs and inequalities become nearly impossible. Our tutors start by identifying exactly where the chain breaks for each student. If you scored 8 out of 15 on Equations but 3 out of 15 on Graphs, we know the connection between algebra and graphical representation needs work. That targeted approach is how our GCSE students consistently improve by one to two grades.
