What Does Geometry & Measures Cover?
Geometry and Measures tests your spatial reasoning and ability to work with shapes, angles, and dimensions. It is a topic where strong visual understanding makes a huge difference. Students who can draw clear diagrams and annotate them tend to pick up marks that others miss. If your score here is below Grade 5, focused practice on area, volume and Pythagoras will yield the fastest improvement.
Angles & Properties (20 marks)
Angle rules (in triangles, quadrilaterals, polygons and parallel lines), properties of 2D and 3D shapes, congruence and similarity. This sub-topic carries the most marks because it appears in both straightforward calculations and multi-step reasoning questions.
Area & Volume (15 marks)
Calculating the area of triangles, parallelograms, trapezia and circles. Surface area and volume of prisms, cylinders, cones, spheres and composite solids. Converting between units of area and volume.
Transformations (15 marks)
Reflections, rotations, translations and enlargements. Describing single transformations that map one shape onto another. Combining transformations and understanding their effects on coordinates.
Pythagoras & Trigonometry (15 marks)
Using Pythagoras' theorem in 2D and 3D problems. Trigonometric ratios (sin, cos, tan) for right-angled triangles. The sine rule, cosine rule and area formula for non-right-angled triangles. Exact trigonometric values.
Vectors (15 marks)
Understanding vector notation, adding and subtracting vectors, and scalar multiples. Using vectors to prove geometric properties such as parallel lines and midpoints. Vector geometry questions often appear as the final few marks on the paper.
How Think Smart Academy Can Help
Geometry is a visual subject, and our tutors use diagrams, physical models, and step-by-step constructions to make abstract concepts tangible. If you scored 5 out of 15 on Pythagoras and Trigonometry, we will work through right-angled triangle problems until the method is second nature — then extend to 3D applications and non-right-angled triangles. We do not move on until the student is confident.
