What Does the Number Topic Cover?

Number is the backbone of GCSE Maths. It covers the fundamental arithmetic and numerical reasoning skills that underpin every other topic on the paper. If your Number score is below a Grade 5, it is likely affecting your performance across Algebra, Geometry and Statistics too.

Integers & Decimals (20 marks)

Place value, ordering, rounding, estimation, and the four operations with whole numbers and decimals. This sub-topic also includes prime factorisation, HCF, and LCM — all of which appear regularly in the higher tier papers.

Fractions (15 marks)

Adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions and mixed numbers. Converting between fractions, decimals and percentages. Simplifying and comparing fractions.

Percentages (15 marks)

Calculating percentage increase and decrease, reverse percentages, compound interest and repeated percentage change. These questions often carry the most marks in the Number section.

Powers & Roots (15 marks)

Index notation, laws of indices, surds and simplifying expressions involving powers and roots. Understanding these rules is essential for higher-grade algebra questions as well.

Standard Form (15 marks)

Writing numbers in standard form, converting between standard form and ordinary numbers, and performing calculations with standard form. A reliable source of marks for students who practise the technique.
