What's in GCSE English Literature?

AQA GCSE English Literature is assessed by two closed-book written exams. "Closed-book" means you cannot take your texts into the exam — all quotations must be learned by heart. The course covers a Shakespeare play, a 19th-century novel, a 20th or 21st-century text, a cluster of 15 poems from an anthology, and unseen poetry. Every essay is marked on how closely you analyse language, structure and context.

Paper 1: Shakespeare + 19th Century Novel (64 marks, 1h 45m)

Section A (34 marks): an essay on an extract from your studied Shakespeare play (commonly Macbeth, Romeo & Juliet, or The Tempest) linking to the whole play. Section B (30 marks): an essay on your 19th-century novel (commonly A Christmas Carol, Jekyll & Hyde, or Great Expectations). Paper 1 also includes 4 SPaG marks.

Paper 2: Modern Text + Poetry (96 marks, 2h 15m)

Section A (34 marks): essay on your modern text (An Inspector Calls, Blood Brothers, Animal Farm, etc.). Section B (30 marks): comparing two poems from your studied anthology (Power & Conflict, Love & Relationships, or Worlds & Lives). Section C (32 marks): analysing two unseen poems, with a comparison question on the second. Paper 2 also includes 4 SPaG marks.
