What's in GCSE Physics (Triple)?
AQA GCSE Physics (8463) covers 8 topics with deeper mathematical content than Combined Science. Triple Physics students get additional work on static electricity, thermal physics calculations, and space physics. Assessment is two 1h 45m papers, 100 marks each. 10 Required Practicals are tested through exam questions — there's no separate practical exam.
Paper 1: Topics 1–4 (100 marks)
Energy, electricity, particle model of matter, atomic structure. Lots of equations — most formulas are given, but you need to recall a smaller set (kinetic energy, power, density, wave speed). Paper 1 rewards students who memorise which variables go into which equation.
Paper 2: Topics 5–8 (100 marks)
Forces, waves, magnetism and electromagnetism, space physics. More problem-solving than Paper 1 and more extended calculations. Space physics is often last in the textbook and under-revised — students at Grade 8/9 boundary often drop easy marks here.
Where Physics Students Lose Marks
Three big ones: unit conversion errors (kW to W, cm to m), rearranging equations under time pressure, and missed marks on 6-mark "describe the experiment" required-practical questions. Physics rewards students who drill standard form, unit conversions, and equation rearranging until they are automatic.
