Buckinghamshire's 11+ Is Different, Your Child's Preparation Should Be Too

If you've looked into 11+ preparation before, you'll know that not all transfer tests are the same. The Buckinghamshire exam, the Secondary Transfer Test (STT), is administered directly by the county council and covers verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning, and mathematics across two papers, a different structure from the Slough Consortium's test, even though both use the same GL Assessment provider.

That distinction matters. Generic 11+ materials won't fully prepare your child for what they'll face on test day. At Think Smart Academy in High Wycombe, every lesson is built around the Bucks-specific test format, question types, and scoring patterns.

Our centre on Crendon Street sits right in the heart of High Wycombe, within easy reach of families across the town and surrounding areas including Marlow, Beaconsfield, and Hazlemere.

Buckinghamshire Grammar Schools

One Secondary Transfer Test, sat on 8 and 10 September 2026 (practice on the 8th, main test on the 10th), covers all of Buckinghamshire's grammar schools. A standardised score of 121 (standardised) automatically qualifies a child for a place, each school then allocates by catchment, distance, or Pupil Premium priority.

What We Cover in the Buckinghamshire 11+

Our 11+ programme is structured around the two core components of the Bucks transfer test, with additional English and Maths support to build the underlying skills your child needs.

Verbal Reasoning

The verbal reasoning section tests your child's ability to think logically using words. We cover all the key question types that appear in the Bucks test:

  • Word patterns, codes, and hidden words
  • Analogies, synonyms, and antonyms
  • Comprehension and logical deduction
  • Vocabulary building and word relationships

Non-Verbal Reasoning

Non-verbal reasoning assesses spatial awareness and pattern recognition without relying on language skills. We teach your child to:

  • Identify sequences and patterns in shapes
  • Recognise reflections, rotations, and translations
  • Solve figure matrices and odd-one-out questions
  • Work quickly and accurately under timed conditions

English Foundations

Strong reading comprehension and vocabulary are essential for verbal reasoning success. We strengthen these skills through:

  • Comprehension exercises with inference questions
  • Expanding vocabulary through structured word lists
  • Grammar, spelling, and punctuation reinforcement

Maths Foundations

While the Bucks 11+ doesn't include a standalone Maths paper, numerical skills underpin many reasoning questions. We ensure your child is solid on:

  • Number sequences and series
  • Mental arithmetic fluency
  • Problem-solving and logical thinking

Frequently Asked Questions About 11+ Tuition in High Wycombe

Buckinghamshire uses the Secondary Transfer Test (STT), provided by GL Assessment (the same provider used in Slough) but administered directly by Buckinghamshire Council. The STT is two papers of about 60 minutes each, covering verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning, and mathematics. A standardised score of 121 automatically qualifies a child for a Buckinghamshire grammar school place. The next test takes place on Saturday 10 September 2026 (with a practice sitting on 8 September). Our tutors are thoroughly familiar with the Bucks-specific format and tailor every session accordingly.
We recommend starting in Year 4 for a steady, low-pressure approach. This gives your child roughly 12 to 18 months to build core skills without cramming. Some families begin earlier to strengthen foundations in English and Maths, while others join us in the summer of Year 5 for intensive revision. We adapt to wherever your child is starting from.
There are 12 Buckinghamshire grammar schools within reach of High Wycombe, including Royal Grammar School and Wycombe High School in the town itself, John Hampden Grammar School, both Dr Challoner's schools, Sir William Borlase's, Beaconsfield High, and the Aylesbury and Chesham schools. See the full list with places and Ofsted ratings above. One Secondary Transfer Test score opens the door to applications at all of them.
Each session lasts one hour and follows a focused plan. We begin with targeted teaching on a specific reasoning or comprehension skill, move into guided practice with exam-style questions, and finish with timed mini-tests so your child builds speed under controlled conditions. Homework is set weekly to reinforce what was covered.
High scores on practice papers are encouraging, but the real exam adds time pressure and unfamiliar question styles. We work with confident children on exam technique, time management, and handling tricky questions that are designed to trip up strong students. The goal is to turn a good score into a consistently excellent one.
Yes. We run regular mock exams under timed, exam-hall conditions throughout the year. Each mock is followed by a detailed breakdown so parents can see exactly where their child excels and where more work is needed. Mocks are included for students on our preparation programme at no extra cost.
