How to Get Into John Hampden Grammar School

Think Smart Academy 6 min read

John Hampden Grammar School is one of the most sought-after boys’ grammar schools in Buckinghamshire, and a place there is decided by a single thing: how your son performs in the Buckinghamshire Secondary Transfer Test. Every year, far more families apply than there are seats, so strong preparation matters. Knowing how the school selects its pupils, what score you are realistically aiming for, and how the catchment works gives your family an advantage long before test day arrives.

This guide sets out what a Buckinghamshire family needs to know to give their son the best chance of securing a place at John Hampden for September 2027 entry. It covers the school’s record, the structure of the entrance exam, the qualifying score and realistic targets, the key dates, and the catchment rules. We also explain how to build a preparation plan that starts at the right time and avoids the common pitfalls.

School Overview

John Hampden Grammar School is a selective boys’ school for ages 11 to 18 on Marlow Hill, High Wycombe, HP11 1SZ (URN 136771). It is a member of The Buckinghamshire Grammar Schools (TBGS) partnership.

At its most recent inspection, graded on 14 September 2022, Ofsted rated John Hampden Outstanding overall and in every category. That judgement was made before the September 2024 change to inspection reporting, and the school continues to hold it.

For 2024/25, Department for Education data shows an Attainment 8 score of 72.3, with 97.8% of pupils achieving grade 5 or above in both English and maths, which places the school among the strongest performers in the county. (A Progress 8 score was not calculated for 2024/25.)

The sixth form picture is just as strong. In 2025 the Good Schools Guide reported that 43% of A-level entries were graded A*–A and 75% were graded A*–B, with the DfE recording an average grade of B+ for the same year. These results open doors to competitive universities and courses.

The Entrance Exam: Buckinghamshire Secondary Transfer Test

Admission to John Hampden is determined by the Buckinghamshire Secondary Transfer Test, the county-wide 11+ administered by TBGS and provided by GL Assessment. There is no separate school-specific paper, every Buckinghamshire grammar school uses the same test.

The assessment consists of two papers, each lasting around 60 minutes, covering three areas:

  • Verbal reasoning: working with words, language patterns and logic.
  • Non-verbal reasoning: spotting patterns and relationships in shapes and diagrams.
  • Maths: applying Key Stage 2 mathematics under timed conditions.

Because the format is standardised and the questions are unfamiliar to most children, success depends on systematic preparation rather than last-minute cramming.

Pass Mark and Realistic Score Targets

The qualifying score for the Buckinghamshire Secondary Transfer Test is 121. A standardised score of 121 or above means a child has “qualified”, that is, met the threshold the county considers to indicate selective ability.

Reaching 121 makes your son eligible for a grammar place; it does not by itself guarantee a place at John Hampden specifically. Where a school is oversubscribed, qualifying children are then ranked according to the school’s admissions criteria (covered below). So families serious about John Hampden should aim comfortably above the 121 threshold rather than treat it as the finish line. A higher score builds a buffer and strengthens your position in a competitive year.

Key Dates for September 2027 Entry

For children entering Year 7 in September 2027, the timeline is fixed. Miss the registration window and your son cannot sit the test.

  • Registration opens: 10am on 1 May 2026
  • Registration deadline: 3pm on Tuesday 2 June 2026
  • Test dates: 8 and 10 September 2026

Registration is the parent’s responsibility and is completely separate from the standard secondary school application. Put these dates in your calendar now. We also recommend attending the school’s open evening to get a feel for the place: John Hampden’s next open evening is on 8 July 2026, with booking opening on 15 June 2026.

Competition and Catchment

John Hampden admits 180 pupils into Year 7 each year (its Published Admission Number, or PAN). With consistently strong demand, qualifying children frequently outnumber available seats.

When the school is oversubscribed, places are allocated according to its admissions policy. After looked-after children and exceptional medical or social need, John Hampden operates two designated Priority Areas, A and B, within its catchment. Children living in these priority areas are considered ahead of those further afield. Where places remain after the priority areas have been satisfied, they are offered in distance order, measured from home to school.

So two factors decide your son’s outcome: his test score and where you live relative to the school. A family living within Priority Area A with a strong score is in a favourable position; a family living a long distance away will need both a qualifying score and the catchment maths to fall in their favour. Because the exact cut-off distance shifts year to year with demand, check the current admissions arrangements directly with TBGS and the school before relying on previous years’ figures.

Preparation Timeline and Strategy

The biggest predictor of success is starting early enough. The ideal time to begin is Year 4, which gives roughly eighteen months to build ability across all three test areas without rushing. Starting in Year 5 is still workable, but the runway is shorter and the schedule tighter.

At Think Smart Academy we prepare each child across the four core areas separately, verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning, maths and the underlying English skills, rather than blending everything into a single generic “11+” lesson. Teaching each strand on its own merits means weaknesses are identified and addressed precisely, rather than hidden inside an average.

We cap our 11+ classes at eight pupils. Small groups mean every child gets attention, regular feedback and the chance to ask questions, unlike a crowded classroom where struggling pupils slip through unnoticed.

A sensible plan for a September 2027 entrant looks like this:

  • Year 4: Build foundations, strong arithmetic, wide vocabulary, confident reading, and an introduction to reasoning question types.
  • Early Year 5: Move to focused technique work in all three test areas; introduce timed practice gradually.
  • Spring and summer of Year 5: Sit regular mock tests under exam conditions, review every paper, and target remaining weaknesses.
  • September 2026: Test day, by which point the format should feel routine.

Families in and around High Wycombe can attend our High Wycombe centre, and we also teach online for those who prefer to learn from home or live further out. Not sure where your son stands today? We offer a free diagnostic assessment that pinpoints his current level in each area and shows what a plan would target.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Starting too late. Leaving preparation until the summer before the test compresses eighteen months of learning into a few stressful weeks. Begin in Year 4 wherever possible.
  • Treating 121 as the goal. Qualifying is the minimum, not the target. In an oversubscribed year, aim well above the threshold.
  • Ignoring the catchment. A brilliant score still has to clear the Priority Area and distance criteria. Understand where you stand before you build expectations.
  • Neglecting one subject. Children often coast on their strongest area and avoid their weakest. The test rewards balance across all three papers.
  • Skipping timed practice. Knowing the material is not the same as performing under a 60-minute clock. Mock conditions are essential.
  • Missing the registration window. The 2 June 2026 deadline is absolute. No registration, no test, no place.
