What This Diagnostic Is Testing

GCSE English Language is not tested by rote knowledge. It's tested by your ability to analyse language and structure, and to produce your own writing under time pressure. This 10-question diagnostic sits at the boundary — it tests the concepts students need to understand before analysis becomes possible. If the concepts are fuzzy, analysis will be too.

If you scored 8–10

Strong technical foundation. The route to Grade 8/9 is analytical depth — making multiple, developed points about language and structure, and writing with originality in Section B.

If you scored 5–7

Mid-range. Focused work on Paper 1 Q3 (structure) and Paper 2 Q2 (summary) typically lifts students a grade. These are the questions most commonly left blank or rushed.

If you scored below 5

The technical vocabulary (metaphor, simile, juxtaposition, etc.) needs consolidating first. Our tutors build a glossary and apply it systematically to extracts from the exam papers.

Pair with the grade calculator

Combine this diagnostic with our paper-by-paper grade calculator for a fuller picture — mock scores give a more precise grade estimate than 10 MC questions can.
